Koi are, at their core, carp. Extremely fancy carp, descended from the kind of fish people kept for food. At some point they leveraged their looks into a completely different arrangement — ornamental ponds, decorative bridges, being fed by strangers. Very good hustle.
This polish has the same energy. It looks like a koi fish in motion: warm, saturated orange with color-shifting flakes that catch the light like scales just under the surface. A nail polish’s journey is not quite the same (please don’t eat it). But beautiful, glamorous. At home in a pond. Like a koi fish.
The name is also a nod to “Coy Boy,” a short instrumental by Blue Iverson — a musical project from British experimental artist Dean Blunt. Very short. Very good. Not quite sure what inspired the title, but Coy Boy makes me think of someone who toys with your affections. To keep from being eaten, maybe. Which, again: like a koi fish.
