There is something deeply ambitious about the concept album. Also something deeply pretentious about it. These two things are not in conflict — they are, in fact, the point. You are meant to consume it whole, in order, in one sitting, ideally while reading the liner notes and feeling things. Pull a single track out of context and it loses the thread. The weak track drags everything down. The strong track carries more weight than it should. My kid was emo. My kid thought this would be a form of musical rebellion. My kid was wrong because I was already there.
Blood, Blood Gallons of the Stuff is a highly pigmented chrome that shifts aggressively between a stark near-black base and a dramatic red-gold duochrome that catches the light like something cinematic and slightly unhinged. It is dramatic. It demands the full runtime. It is never enough.
