The Bugaloos aired from 1970 to 1972. Sid and Marty Krofft created it. Martha Raye played the villain — Benita Bizarre, Rock Witch and self-proclaimed Queen of All Witchdom — and she wore hats. Not regular hats. Towering, feathered, maximalist confections in colors that had no business coexisting, which meant they coexisted brilliantly. She lived in an oversized jukebox. She was unhinged. She was magnificent.
Years later, she’d do Polident commercials. “Take it from the Big Mouth.” That’s probably how most of GenX actually knows her, which is honestly a shame.
